Jenny, one of the professional volunteer doctors of the Hong Kong Red Cross Health Emergency Response Unit, recently participated in a rescue operation at the Central Mediterranean Sea. She treated a 9-year-old patient previously diagnosed with total deafness in his country. Yet, over time she found that the child responded to her phone alarm and immediately referred the boy to a colleague from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Health Emergency Response Unit trains and deploys a pool of highly qualified volunteers to respond to overseas humanitarian needs during disasters and health emergencies.

In addition to Jenny, over the past 15 years, the professional volunteers of the Health Emergency Response Unit have ranged across the world, in response to the typhoon in the Philippines, the Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa, the population movement in Bangladesh, the complex emergencies in Syria, and the earthquake in Haiti. Even in the time of COVID-19 which is under travel restrictions, they are not deterred from setting out to the affected countries.
