Myanmar earthquake one-month on: Urgent International Aid Needed
On 28 March 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, claiming countless lives and causing widespread destruction. Emergency relief phase has passed on, the situation remains dire. Over 50,000 buildings have completely collapsed, and at least 100 medical facilities are severely damaged. Nearly 198,000 people have been displaced, many of whom are forced to sleep outdoors in scorching 40°C heat.
The affected communities urgently need clean drinking water, shelters, toilets, hygiene supplies, and medical care. With the cyclone season approaching, the risk of floods and landslides threatens to worsen an already desperate situation.
A Beacon of Hope in Crisis
“The efforts of the Myanmar Red Cross Society mean so much, not only to me but also to all the patients here.”
In the hard-hit Sagaing region, a woman injured during the quake remains unable to stand. The medical care and every word of encouragement from MRCS volunteers made her feel the warmth of humanity, giving her hope for recovery after the disaster.
Staying Strong Amidst Bereavement — U Atar Kyaw
U Atar Kyaw, a Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) volunteer, lost his brother in the earthquake. Despite his grief, he remained steadfast at his post, helping those in need. After a moment of silence, he said, “That’s what being a Red Cross volunteer means — putting humanity first.”
Hong Kong Red Cross’s Response and Long-term Commitment
Dr. Joyce CHING, Head of International and Relief Service of the HKRC, stated, "The ongoing relief efforts merely represent the first step. For those affected in Myanmar, the journey to rebuild their lives will be long and challenging. In the coming years, considerable humanitarian support will be essential, and your generous contributions will be crucial to making a significant impact."
The Hong Kong Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal for "Myanmar Earthquake 2025" from 29 March to 11 April 2025, and will continue to receive donations to address the urgent humanitarian needs in Myanmar. In response to the International Red Cross's recruitment efforts, we deployed personnel to Myanmar in April as the health project coordinator to participate in medical and public health coordination work, for approximately two months.
As of April 2025, we have allocated around HKD 2.1 million in funding, collaborating with the International Red Cross to support the emergency and recovery needs in the affected areas of Myanmar, including procurement of kitchenware, hygiene kits, solar lamps, mosquito nets, shelter toolkits and water purification units.
The Long Way to Recovery: A Call for Ongoing Support
For those affected by the earthquake in Myanmar, recovery is just beginning. Humanitarian needs will evolve as response efforts progress, requiring sustained support in the years ahead. Your generous donations will provide vital hope and resources for those seeking to rebuild their lives.
