Since 2021, the IFRC Asia Pacific MHPSS Collaborative, hosted by the Hong Kong Red Cross, has been dedicated to providing technical support to National Societies across the Asia Pacific region, ensuring the delivery of effective and high-quality Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) programs for individuals affected by disasters, crises, and emergencies. The Collaborative works with 38 National Societies, offering emergency response assistance, facilitating and conducting MHPSS trainings, promoting knowledge management and information sharing, and engaging in humanitarian diplomacy to continuously advocate for the importance of mental health and psychosocial well-being.
At the heart of the Collaborative’s mission is the goal to strengthen community resilience and ensure that mental health care is accessible, rights-based, and responsive to the evolving needs of vulnerable populations. This year, the Collaborative is prioritizing more proactive support to countries facing protracted crises, particularly Afghanistan and Myanmar.
In Afghanistan, the focus is on enhancing the capacity of the Afghan Red Crescent Society to deliver clinical mental health services through its Mental Health Rehabilitation Centers (MHRCs). Currently, there are five MHRCs in operation from different provinces in Afghanistan, all of which are in urgent need of quality improvement. The Collaborative plans to deploy mental health professionals to support service delivery and build the capacity of medical staff through a rights-based approach, while continuing to advocate for the needs of the residents in these facilities.
Meanwhile, in Myanmar, the Collaborative is supporting the recovery efforts of the Myanmar Red Cross Society following the devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake in March 2025. Initial technical support has been provided, but significant capacity-building is still needed. The Collaborative aims to help MRCS and affected communities foster resilience through targeted training and the expansion of community-based MHPSS activities.
Through these efforts, the Collaborative continues to champion the strengthening of mental health and psychosocial support into humanitarian response, ensuring that no one is left behind in times of crisis.
