Severe and widespread floodings across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam have affected over 10 million people, with more than 1.2 million displaced, destorying homes and critical infrastructure. Intensified monsoon rains, tropical storms and cyclones have triggered devastating flash floods and landslides, leaving thousands of families homeless and seeking shelter in evacuation centres across Asia.
Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst disasters in decades after Cyclone Ditwah struck in late November, affecting over 1.5 million people and displaced 230,000 people across all 25 districts in the country. Hundreds have died, many remain missing as search and rescue operations continue. Major water supply facilities have been damaged or submerged, and several hospitals remain flooded or damaged. The floods have also left 1.5 million people facing moderate to severe food insecurity.
The local authority has declared a state of emergency. Urgent needs include cooked food, safe water, medicines, and shelter.
"People have had to move because of the flooding. The floods damaged their homes, and they had nowhere else to go than to set up shelter on a highway: a dangerous alternative to an already dangerous situation of staying in a flooded area," shared by the Head of Country Cluster Delegation for South Asia in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has mobilized more than 3,500 volunteers, who distributing safe water, hygiene kit and necessary relief items to the affected people.
In Indonesia, continuous heavy rainfall from late November triggered devastating floods and landslide, impacted 3.3 million people, with at least 576,000 displaced and over 830 deaths reported. The Indonesian Red Cross Society has mobilized over 1,600 staff and volunteers to conduct evacuations, provide first aid and operate public kitchens, but access remains difficult and resources are stretched.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, localized floodings have disrupted transport and essential services, compounding vulnerabilities for communities already facing economic pressures and climate-related shocks. Recovery will be slow and difficult without sustained support.
Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are actively responding on the ground, providing immediate humanitarian assistance to those in need. But the scale of needs is growing faster than local capacity.
Communities across the affected regions remain extremely vulnerable, and urgent support is still desperately needed to deliver lifesaving aid and help families rebuild their lives. Your donation will allow us to help fund the emergency responses of the Red Cross Movement, who are on the front lines, working tirelessly to assist those impacted by these devastating disasters.
