Since late February 2026, the escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel have evolved into a rapidly intensifying regional crisis, generating spillover effects across the Middle East region. Thousands of civilians have been killed or injured. People in affected areas have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety.

Significant humanitarian impacts have been observed in Iran and Lebanon. According to the International Red Cross, approximately 60 million people in Iran are potentially affected by the humanitarian crisis, out of which 3.2 million people have become internally displaced. Densely populated areas and civilian infrastructure including health facilities and schools sustained significant damage, which might disrupt essential urban services such as water supply, sanitation and electricity network.

An estimated 4.2 million people are exposed to the impacts of escalation in Lebanon. Displacement continues to increase, with over 1 million individuals displaced nationwide. Increased reliance on collective shelters are placing pressure on shelter capacity and essential services. Immediate needs include safe emergency shelter, hygiene kits, and other household items.

Hostilities are also putting the lives of frontline humanitarian and medical personnel in grave danger. A Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) paramedic and an Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) staff were fatally wounded in March 2026 while providing aid to civillians. Despite the risk to their own lives, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the affected countries continue to provide emergency relief assistance. IRCS has deployed 6,500 staff and volunteers to carry out search and rescue operations, provide first aid and psychosocial support. LRC activated its emergency response mechanism to assist injured individuals and distribute relief items to displaced households. In Israel, the Magen David Adom has been providing medical treatment and mass public training in conflict-related first aid.

Continued military confrontations could contribute to rising casualties and population displacement. Urgent action is required to scale up emergency medical response, strengthen protection services for vulnerable groups, and to provide emergency shelter and immediate assistance to those displaced. Your support will be instrumental in enhancing the Red Cross Movement ability to deliver timely humanitarian assistance where needed, bringing relief to the affected population in the midst of crisis.
