Millions of people around the world are affected by the increasingly severe and complex disasters every year. In 2024, nearly 300 million people will need humanitarian aid. The devastation inflicted by natural disasters and conflicts can be incalculable and emergency assistance is a matter of ugency.

Natural calamities, predominantly driven by weather and climate-related factors, are exacerbated by climate change. The frequency of droughts, floods, storms, and forest fires is escalating, leading to devastating consequences. Other disasters such as epidermics, earthquakes and armed conflicts also have profound impacts especially to vulnerable populations.

In September 2023, North-eastern Libya was ravaged by a massive storm triggered floods along the coast, resulted in deaths of thousands of people, with 10,000 people reported missing and 30,000 displaced. The disaster has affected a staggering total of nearly 1.6 million people.

“Whether it’s men, women, or young girls, everyone was crying. Everyone was forced to leave their homes due to the flood, and no one was able to stay behind.” Zahraa Saleh, a survivor of the floods in Libya recalls. "I was woken by the screams of my neighbours and my daughters." When Zahraa and her family tried to escape, they found themselves trapped by the floodwaters. They took refuge on the roof of their apartment until they were finally rescued in the morning.
