Around the world, tens of millions of people are affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts every year. It is estimated that in 2026, nearly 240 million people will require urgent humanitarian assistance.
Growing climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of disasters including hurricanes, floods, droughts and heatwaves. Climate crisis not only inflicts casualties and causes displacement, but also worsens food insecurity, bringing devastating consequences to lives and livelihoods.
24-year-old Massoud lives in Khod Ro village of Kushk district in Afghanistan together with seven family members. He works as a hairdresser and earns 100 Afghani (approximately HKD 11) per day, which is not sufficient to meet the basic needs of his family. Massoud was saddened by the earthquakes not only because his brother was injured, but also because of the increasingly difficult living conditions, “Given the frequent rains and droughts in the area, it is making people more and more difficult to make a living.”
On the other hand, armed conflicts are on the rise. By mid-2025, nearly 117 million people had been forcibly displaced by conflict and violence, along with increasing number of civilian casualties.
Ahmed was the breadwinner of the family until he was injured in the Gaza conflict. Though recovering well, he constantly worried about providing for his family as he had done before. With support from the mental health and psychosocial support team at the Red Cross Field Hospital, Ahmed no longer looks back and is now focused on his upcoming discharge from hospital and the chance to provide for his family again.
In the face of disasters and conflicts, swift delivery of humanitarian assistance is vital. The Hong Kong Red Cross’ Overseas Disaster Relief Fund ensures timely assistance in the form of cash grant, food, shelter, health and sanitation services.
Since 2023, Hong Kong Red Cross has mobilized over HKD 60 million to support global emergency relief operations, including Israel and Gaza Strip conflict, Myanmar earthquake, humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Syria and Lebanon, Türkiye-Syria earthquake, Afghanistan earthquake, floods and typhoons in Asia, Kenya floods, as well as Africa Mpox epidemic.
Together with the Hong Kong Red Cross, we can extend a hand of help and offer hope to those affected.
