In the past ten years, 83% of all disasters triggered by natural hazards were caused by extreme climate-related events, including droughts, floods and cyclones that directly affected 1.7 billion people, and more than 410,000 people were killed. At the same time, secondary threats such as food shortage, disease outbreaks, and disrupted livelihood should not be underestimated.

Diversified elderly service
According to the statistics of the Census and Statistics Department, the proportion of people aged 65 or above in Hong Kong reached 20.5% in 2021, while another report showed that one-third of the single person household, around 150,000 people, are singleton elderly aged 65 or above. The demand of elderly service is soaring.

"The earthquake has left us with nothing,” Muhammad Ishaq, a 55-year-old father of 12 children from Afghanistan. “My sons and daughters got cold and got sick because we don’t have a warm place to live. We had a water well which was also destroyed by the earthquake and now we don’t have clean water to drink.”

Mobility Equipment Loan Service – “Door-to-door” delivery (DTD)
The HKRC has been offering MEL Service since 1975, to provide high-quality and low-rent mobility equipment. In response to the rapidly changing epidemic situation, the “Door-to-door” delivery (DTD) service was kicked off in early 2021, the delivery fee and part of the rental are waived for eligible cases, so as to help the elderly and low-income families improve their mobility during the rehabilitation period and reduce the financial burden of the applicants and caretakers.
