Hong Kong is one of the Asian regions with the highest risk of natural disasters, often threstened by various disasters, including typhoons, rainstorms, heatwaves, air pollution ,etc. Climate change will lead to more frequent precipitation, intensifying tropical cyclones and rainfall, along with rising sea level that will bring more severve storm surges and flooding.
There are many people still live in high-risk districts in Hong Kong, including low-lying, coastal areas that exposed to serious flood, and also areas prone to landslides, which are constantly facing the impact of various disasters.
The Hong Kong Red Cross Community Resilience Service provides disaster preparedness services in high-risk districts including Sai Kung and Pok Fu Lam Village, to enhance their awareness and ability to respond to disasters.
Objectives:
- Enhance awareness, knowledge and skills to response and preparedness capacity to urban crises and emergencies;
- Strengthen community integration and capacity of underprivileged population to respond to disaster risks;
- Enhance cohesion and capacity of communities to prepare for emergency risks and strengthen community resilience.
Contents:
- Conduct needs assessment and home visits.
- Conduct education talks, workshops, and activities.
- Organize emergency disaster drills with related stakeholders and government departments.
- Set up emergency supplies such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, alarms.
- Establish self-help network in the communities.
- Organize social activities to enhance social cohesion.
